In Strasbourg this week Daniel questioned the European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, on the need to improve the quality of disabled toilets at European airports. Daniel has recently launched a Written Declaration in the European Parliament calling for more and better quality disabled toilets at transport hubs in the EU, inspired by the Clough family from Lichfield, who met Daniel last year to discuss the Changing Places Campaign for advanced disabled toilets. Daniel has now written to the Commissioner, who has promised to look at the issue in more detail, and he is hoping to arrange for the Clough family to meet with the Commissioner when they visit Brussels next month.
Changing Places provide enough space and equipment such as changing benches and hoists so that severely disabled persons don't have to be changed on the often dirty floors of regular disabled toilets. There are over 800 changing places in the UK, including at most of our airports, but very few advanced disabled toilets exist at other European airports. Improving this situation in the rest of Europe will help disabled UK passengers to travel in the same comfort as other airport users and Daniel will continue to make this case in the coming months.
