West Midlands MEP Dan Dalton condemned President Trump's steel and aluminium tariffs at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, and stated that UK industry would need protecting from the consequences of the President's decision.
After the Parliament's debate on the US's decision, Dan, who is consumer spokesman for Conservative MEPs and a member of the Parliament's delegation for relations with the US, said:
"I deeply regret the US decision and the impact that it will have on UK industry, we rightly need to defend ourselves from these tariffs, but any countermeasures should be measured, we need to avoid escalating the situation."
"The UK and the EU are close allies of the United States. We work together to guarantee each other's security through NATO and many other international forums. The US should recognise this close partnership and grant the UK and the EU the same exemption as their NAFTA partners have been given from these tariffs."
"Tariffs are not the right way to tackle the global oversupply of steel. Instead, a multilateral solution is needed."
